The Famous Pultec Trick

The magic of the Pultec is boosting AND cutting at the same low frequency:

What HappensWhy It Works
Boost turnover at freq × 6Deep bass gets boosted
Cut turnover at freq × 13.5Low-mids get cut
ResultTight, punchy low end with no mud

Try it: Set Low Freq to 60 Hz, Boost to 5 dB, Cut to 4 dB

Quick Tips

  • The Pultec Trick: Boost + Cut at same frequency = tight, punchy bass
  • 16 kHz setting: The legendary "air" frequency for mastering
  • Less is more: On mix bus, 1-2 dB changes make a big difference
  • Bandwidth: Start broad (0.5) for subtle, go narrow for surgical
  • A/B testing: Use Output Gain to match levels when bypassing
  • Hi Cut at 10k: Removes harshness while keeping presence
  • 60 Hz: The most versatile low frequency for kick and bass
  • Spectrum Analyzer: Yellow = EQ curve, Gray = audio spectrum
